The SALT Ministry

The SALT Civic Awareness Group is one of the ministries at Jesus House; it exists to educate, equip and encourage Christians to get involved in public life by voting or, where they wish, to stand for office.

We hope to raise discussions on the most pertinent faith and politics issues and engage in useful debate on how to build stronger, healthier communities. We aim to be the salt as commanded in Matthew 5:13.

Objectives
  • To inspire Christians to make a difference in their communities.
  • To educate and encourage active or passive engagement in public life.
  • To serve as a resource portal for Christians who are involved with or want to engage in civic duties.
  • To encourage and support people already engaged in community.
  • To encourage debate and biblical thinking on topical issues.

The Arms Of The Ministry
Community Service Volunteers (CSV)

Help to improve your local area and the lives of local people by volunteering your time to work on community-based projects. Giving a few hours each week can make a real difference within your local area. From helping to run a community based scheme, to providing support over local health issues, there are many ways to help.

Magistracy

Magistrates or Justices of the Peace (JPs) are volunteers from all walks of life who deal with around 95 per cent of criminal cases in England and Wales, including many of the crimes that most affect the public, such as anti-social behaviour. Magistrates are not paid for their services. However, many employers allow time off with pay for magistrates.

Politics
Councillors

Local councils are run by elected councillors, who are voted for by local people. Councillors are responsible for making decisions on behalf of the community about local services, such as education, rubbish collection and leisure facilities..

Member of Parliament (MP)

The public elects MPs to represent their respective constituencies in the House of Commons. The political party with the most MPs forms the government. MPs consider and propose new laws, and can use their position to ask government ministers questions about current issues. MPs split their time between working in Parliament itself, working in the constituency that elected them, and working for their political party.

Member of European Parliament (MEP) The European Parliament is the only directly-elected body of the European Union. The 736 Members of the European Parliament are there to represent you, the citizen. They are elected once every five years by voters right across the 27 Member States of the European Union on behalf of its 500 million citizens. The UK is, of course, leaving the European Union and will do so by 2019.

School Governorship

Schools are run by a governing body working with the head teacher and senior management team to ensure pupils get a good education. Becoming a governor could be a way of contributing to your local school and learning new skills. All types of people can become school governors. No special qualifications are required, but you must be 18 or over on the date when you are elected or appointed.
