The Hole in Our Gospel - Richard Stearns
This book was written by a man who was the CEO for Lenox, a luxury crockery company in America before he reluctantly answered God’s call to become the president of World Vision, USA. World Vision is a charity that works to make a sustainable impact on poverty and its causes, especially as they affect children.
Reading this book forces you to examine your priorities and to take a deeper look, deeper than may be comfortable, at the ministry to which Jesus calls us. It is a modern day re-telling of the meeting between Jesus and the rich young ruler described in Luke 18:17–19.
Richard Stearns story is compelling as he could be described as a success on every level, a CEO in a thriving company, living in a 10 bedroom mansion, driving a Jag, kids in the right schools and a respected member of his church. Life was good. How many people today believe that God is pleased with them and that they are good Christians because they attend church regularly and give faithfully to worthy causes? This book challenges that type of upper middle class thinking and forces you to ask yourself, “Am I willing to follow Christ no matter the cost? Will I be willing to leave my comfort zone if Christ required it?”
Christianity is more than getting souls saved; it is also about social justice and not superficial piety. Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 25:35-40 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' “Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' “The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
The call to get involved to right the social inequities and injustices we see daily is just as strong as the call to evangelize. This book is a wake-up call to today’s Christian.
