Happy Mother’s Day - Celebrating and Honouring All Women

“She speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.”

One of the most special people in a person’s life is their mother. Although a father’s love can and should never be underestimated, most people would agree that a mother’s love is extremely special. The heart of a home is a mother, whose love is warm and true.

In the Bible, the love of a mother is shown in the story of Jochebed, mother of Moses (Exodus 2). When the Egyptian King decreed that every male Israelite child should be killed, Jochebed showed her unconditional love by saving him.  Moses was raised in Pharoah’s household, which meant that he escaped the decree. The story of Moses, the liberator of the oppressed Israelites, illustrates the great love and courage of a mother.

Mothers Day is an opportunity to celebrate and honour not just our biological mothers, but all the women in our lives and women all over the world. Those special people (wives, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, daughters and friends) whose love and care have in some way contributed to shaping our lives.  

Being a Mother is more than physically giving birth, it is about giving unconditional love. In that respect, we are all Mothers. Every woman is able to give love to those around her.

This year, do more than buy a gift and card. Celebrate all the mothers around you. Reflect on the love of a mother and pray that God continues to bless and strengthen all mothers.
