Exodus Chapters 19 to 21

EXODUS 19

At Mount Sinai

Commentary

Today’s reading marked a pivotal point in the lives of the Israelites, which we are also able relate to our lives today.  God begins to move from just demonstrating his powers to a place where a deep relationship that acknowledged him as God was necessary.  He revealed his holiness by requiring the people to consecrate themselves.  Another word for consecrate is to “set apart” so that he could commune with them.  God wanted the Israelites to know him better so that their trust in him would grow, but the Israelites could not handle it.  In Exodus chapter 20, God began to define the basis of his relationship with them. The relationship was governed by the 10 commandments given to Moses at the top of Mount Sinai.  The relationship we have with God is very much linked to our relationship with one another, so he also defined this in Exodus 21 ensuring that the Israelites treated each other fairly.

The highlights of today’s reading for me are

  • Consecration: setting ourselves apart in order to enter God’s presence or be attractive to him.
  • Obedience: obeying God’s commandments which are pivotal to our relationship with him
  • Respect and love for one another. This is fundamental to fulfilling the greatest commandment which is
love God first and love one another
