EXODUS 9

The Plague on Livestock

Commentary

Talk about stubborn. This guy Pharaoh he is seriously stubborn.  Lice, flies, frogs, is that not enough?  He must have some serious bottle or maybe he is like those football supporters who we see at matches with no clothes on in -5 degrees centigrade.

Listening to the audio and reading along, I was cringing at the graphic images that were flooding my mind, festering boils all over the skin, locusts providing a carpet with sound effects, crunch! with every step, deep darkness such that I can’t even see my own hand.  Yet he would not humble himself.  Okay we know he had a little help from God, but what a fearful thing to fall into the hand of the LORD.

In contrast, how joyful, happy and blessed are those who belong to the LORD.  They and all their possessions are supernaturally protected when He makes a distinction between His own and the world.

As I read through Exodus, I continue to see parallels between Exodus and Revelation - rivers turning to blood (Rev 8:8), locust (Rev 9:3), hail (Rev 8:7), supernatural protection (Rev 7:3), darkness (Rev 16:10), un-repentant people etc.

In chapter 9, we read the account of the seventh plague; the plague of hail and fire on Egypt and I am fascinated at the game play between the Lord and Pharaoh.  I can just hear the exchange between them:

Lord:         Just humble yourself and accept that I am the LORD and there is none like me in all the
                 earth
Pharaoh:  No I will not.
Lord:         You know I can stretch out my hand and destroy you and your people in an instant but
I want my name to be proclaimed throughout the earth that’s why I have raised you up so
I can demonstrate how powerful I am.
Pharaoh:  Yeah but I’m still not going to let your people go.
Lord:         You still insist on exalting yourself against my people by keeping them captive.  Tomorrow,
I will show you who’s boss.

I marvel at the Lord and how merciful he is because he gives the Egyptians a chance to save themselves and their property.  Some believed and obeyed, while others did not.  Does this remind you of anything?  It reminds me of the world around us.  The Lord keeps saying through us, humble yourselves and accept my son Jesus Christ as Lord and saviour. Believe him and do what he says and you will be saved.

It is encouraging to note that those Egyptians who regarded the word of the Lord and obeyed the instruction to bring all their livestock and servants home were saved from the plague.  Sadly to say, there were those who did not regard the word of the Lord and so were destroyed.  This scenario will be repeated several times between now and the day of the Lord, some will be saved and some will choose not to listen.  Let it not be said that we did not tell the world, but we must endeavour to deliver the message of the Lord even as Moses did to Pharaoh.

The most amazing thing in the whole account is what Pharaoh said; “This time I have sinned,” and “The LORD is in the right, and I and my people are in the wrong”.  He knew! Does the world know too?

2 TIMOTHY 2:5

15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
